In 1875 Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa traveled from Genoa Italy to travel to Nicaragua. Leaving behind his family he set up a steamboat route transporting passengers and goods from the East Coast to the West Coast of the US during the California Gold Rush. With the impending coast-to-coast railroad and the construction of the Panama Canal he turned to distilling. In 1890 he set up the Flor de Caa distillery at the foot of the San Cristbal volcano. The rest is history. Flor de Caa recently celebrated their 130th anniversary.
